I spend every Christmas Eve at my friend Pete's house, and this past year I surprised him with a painting of his GTO. Pete built this car himself years ago and recently put together a new Pontiac 455 motor that runs on pump gas—and turns out about 450 horsepower. The car is his special toy, and he built it, he says, for one purpose: "To snot it." Indeed, it runs the quarter mile in the low 12-second range on street tires, through the mufflers. The previous engine, which was high compression and required racing fuel, ran in the high 11s.
