This generation of the Mercedes SL captured the design cues of the 300 and
190 SL designs and updated them to reflect more square lines and higher
production numbers. The angularity of the grille and the drama of the car's
styling were still bold, before Mercedes allowed the SL to become a tennis
club taxi.
This 1971 280 SL, owned by Dr. Barry Sorkin of Farmington Hills, Michigan,
won First Place in the 2005 Gemütlichkeit event, held in conjunction with
the Detroit Institute of Ophthalmology's Eyes On Design annual charity car
show on the vast grounds of the Edsel and Eleanor Ford Estate in Grosse
Point Shores. Lake Michigan is in the background. Barry's car is a rare
four-speed manual-trans model; most U.S.-market SLs of this vintage were
automatics. A five-speed manual was also an option on the 280SL.
